Going Global conference continues in Dubai

The Going Global 2013 conference - which has attracted 1,300 education leaders from nearly 80 countries - will conclude in Dubai today (March 6th).Organised by the British Council, the two-day event is aimed at sharing ideas on how to create successful international knowledge economies.The meeting has been held at the Dubai World Trade Centre and five new pieces of important research will be launched by the time the conference comes to a close.It is fitting that such an important global event has been staged in Dubai.Not only does the city have an impeccable record when it comes to hosting world-class exhibitions and meetings, but the emirate is also fast becoming a hub for education.Indeed, figures published by the the Knowledge and Human Development Authority last week indicated that student enrolment in Dubai higher education facilities increased by 11 per cent in the past year.More people are moving to Dubai to study, as the emirate now has 53 universities and colleges to choose from.HE Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE minister of higher education and scientific research, praised the vision of the British Council and hailed the ambition shown in bringing people from all over the world to one place to discuss education."The UAE, which provides a safe, tolerant and prosperous environment for people from many countries around the globe, understands exactly why Going Global 2013 deserves its fullest support," he remarked."I am delighted that you have all assembled in our country to heighten your knowledge and understanding of global issues in education."UK minister for universities and science David Willetts was in attendance and he stressed just how important it is for countries across the globe to continually improve their further education offerings.He stated that there will be 200 million people studying at college or university worldwide by the end of the decade."That represents a massive challenge, but also a massive opportunity," he commented.
