Dubai's past will 'be showcased in new virtual museum'

The success of the #MyDubai campaign has prompted the government to launch a new app and website that will showcase the emirate's rich culture and history.

Described as a virtual museum, the digital hub will allow people to share memories of old Dubai and will connect the younger generation and tourists to the traditions, culture and heritage of the region.

Stories that are stored in the minds of older residents will be shared with the world and will be presented alongside photographs and images of old Dubai, according to Shatha Al Mulla, an architect with the architectural heritage department of the Dubai Municipality.

Ms Al Mulla told the Khaleej Times that the government is planning to launch the website and accompanying app by the end of 2015, speaking to the news agency after she attended a seminar on Investment in Heritage to mark World Heritage Day (April 18th).

She said: "This is a new way of cultural investment…the investment of people in heritage, promoting their involvement to keep our traditions alive."

To launch the new initiative, a team will be formed with the help of officials from the National Archives in Abu Dhabi.

"The team will choose a group of senior citizens who can recall a lot of old stories and memories. We will record their interviews and document it online," Ms Al Mulla explained.

Using this online platform, the government is hoping to reach a younger generation of residents and tourists. She added that even the children of the late 1980s will be able to share their memories and take part, as much has changed over the last three decades.

Rashad Bukhash, director of the architectural heritage department, noted that the government has spent around AED250 million (£45.5 million) over the last 25 years developing heritage sites across Dubai.
