Dubai RTA first civic authority to achieve ISO energy accreditation

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has become the first Middle-Eastern civic authority to achieve an ISO accreditation in energy management.

The accolade was awarded in recognition for the organisation's commitment to maintain transparency at strategic and local levels. It was also commended for the way it put its vision of providing a sustainable transport network into practice.

Accepting the certificate, Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the authority, outlined how it used state-of-the-art technology to rationalise energy consumption, cut costs and reduce carbon emissions. He also advised the RTA had greatly improved its management practices by fulfilling more operational requirements.

The Metro system was identified as a key part of the emirate's success, as it saved a large amount of energy as a result of its innovative recycling measures. Al Tayer praised these efforts and claimed the new way of working was in-keeping with Dubai's Integrated Energy Strategy, as well as the UAE's 2021 Vision.

He added the project allowed the authority to implement a procedure of continuous-improvement in performance, including making more-educated purchases and coming up with unique solutions to meet the growing level of demand for public transport.

Al Tayer went on: 'This success culminates RTA’s efforts in energy management and sustainability, which echoes the long-term national initiative to build a Green Economy in the UAE initiative under the theme, 'Green Economy for Sustainable Development,' announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.'

The award was accepted from Theuns Kotze, regional director of awarding body the British Standards Institution, in the presence of a host of RTA directors. This included Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim Younes, chief executive officer of RTA Strategy & Corporate Governance, and the head of the corporate technical support services sector, Abdulla Al Madani.

This is now the tenth international certificate the authority has achieved.
