Dubai Airport secures title of world’s second-busiest air hub

Dubai International Airport (DXB) was named the world’s busiest international air hub and – for the first time – the second busiest overall in 2023, marking a major milestone for Dubai’s growing reputation as the region’s only global city.

According to data published by Airports Council International (ACI) World, Dubai accommodated a record 86.9 million passengers last year, up 31.7% compared to 2022, surpassing the growth of traditional rivals Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and London Heathrow (LHR) which posted 11.4% and 28.5% year-on-year increases respectively.

Dubai shadowed both airports and only trailed the US mega-hub of Atlanta in the annual listing which ranks each hub by domestic and international passengers served.

DXB named busiest international hub

DXB dominated the international passenger ranking, eclipsing second-placed LHR by 12 million passengers and third-placed Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands by 25 million passengers.

According to ACI, more than 8.5 billion passengers flew by air in 2023, marking a recovery of 93.8% from pre-pandemic levels. This resurgence, predominantly driven by international travel, underscores the pivotal role of major hubs like DXB in facilitating global connectivity and economic growth.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the result also highlights Dubai’s increasing prominence as a central player in international aviation, contributing significantly to the broader economic and commercial landscape.

“While this milestone was greatly anticipated, its official confirmation instils us with great pride,” he said. “DXB is proud to uphold its status as the world's foremost international airport for an unparalleled ten years.

“Throughout this decade, DXB has surpassed many records and attained numerous milestones, from welcoming our billionth passenger to introducing new terminals and facilities, collaborating with numerous airlines to broaden connectivity to diverse global destinations, all the while enhancing every aspect of the airport experience for our guests.

“Our success owes much to the collective efforts of all service partners within the airport community and the broader aviation, travel, and tourism sectors. Together, we have bolstered Dubai's reputation as the premier destination, offering unparalleled travel experiences worldwide.”
