Diego Maradona bags a brace in Dubai football match

Argentinian footballing legend Diego Maradona rolled back the years when he took part in a tournament in Dubai last week.The former Barcelona and Napoli superstar scored twice as he lined up for the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) in a game against the Dubai Courts, the New Age reports.He converted a penalty and then scored his second from a free kick in the Dubai Government Entities Football League encounter. The ex-World Cup winner seemed to be at the centre of all the action, as he also claimed an assist and was yellow-carded during the 3-2 victory.Maradona has been working for the DSC as a "global ambassador", having spent some time as the manager of Dubai-based club Al Wasl beforehand.The organisation appointed the 52-year-old on a one-year contract back in September 2012 and the council hopes that the football icon can develop the game in the UAE.This is not the first time the Argentinian great has showcased his sporting skills in the Gulf in the past month or so.Indeed, he also appeared at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where he took to the court to play a few games with his fellow countryman Juan Martin del Potro.Speaking to the Association of Tennis Professionals' website after the event, Del Potro said it was "a pleasure" to play alongside one of Argentina's most revered sportsmen."All the Argentinian people love him, and he's our number one sports representative in the world. To hit some balls with him here in this stadium, it's amazing for me," he remarked.Maradona used the event - which was won by world number one Novak Djokovic earlier this month - to promote sport in Dubai. He told Gulf News that Dubai is the "Disneyland of sport" and there is no better place to host major competitions.Looking at the world-class arenas, stadia and facilities on offer throughout the emirate, it is hard not to agree with Maradona.
