Plans to build a ‘mega city’ featuring the world’s largest shopping mall and 100 hotels in Dubai have been unveiled. The huge tourism and retail development named “Mohammed Bin Rashid City” will be located on the outskirts of Dubai’s downtown area. In addition to the “Mall of the World,” with a capacity to host 80 million visitors a year, the development will include a park 30% larger than London’s Hyde Park and a Universal Studios.
“The current facilities available in Dubai need to be scaled up in line with the future ambitions for the city,” His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai commented at the launch of the project. The mega development is yet another sign of Dubai’s economic recovery, post the financial crisis. Tourism in the emirate grew by 10% in the first half of 2012, while hotel revenues soared by 19% in the same period.
