A host of UAE-based athletes are likely to be gearing themselves up for participation in the Olympic Games by taking part in the second GCC Women's Sport Games.
This is according to Talal Al Hashmi, director of the tournament which gets under way in Abu Dhabi next Monday (March 8th).
In total, 500 participants from Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE will battle it out over the six-day championships in seven events, sport360.com reports.
And Al Hashmi believes that taking part in next week's competition will only benefit the athletes and prepare them for the forthcoming summer Olympics - taking place in London in 2012.
He told the news provider: "The preparations have gone well and we are ready for the tournament. The event will get the women athletes used to competition and to show people from the outside the culture of women’s sport and women's life in the UAE.
"We hope they will then go on to the Olympics. It's good preparation for that - they will feel the atmosphere. It is all Olympic standard."
