Kevin Spacey, the Academy Award-winning actor, has announced plans to launch The Middle East Theatre Academy in Dubai.
Spacey, who was in the UAE to host the Laureas World Sports Awards, said the academy would be launched as part of his recently established Kevin Spacey Foundation, which aims to offer creative opportunities to emerging artists, Emirates 24/7 reported.
According to the newspaper, the not-for-profit academy will make use of existing theatre and staging facilities throughout the region and will facilitate workshops, masterclasses and special events led by industry professionals in all aspects of theatre and stagecraft.
It will also focus on providing opportunities and motivation to underprivileged children and teenagers.
The Kevin Spacey Foundation will work in partnership with Badr Jafar, chief executive officer of Crescent Investments, and other private sector interests in the region to support the academy.
"My mentor Jack Lemmon had a phrase that he used all the time, which I've now adopted as my own. He believed that if you've been successful in your chosen path, then 'sending the elevator back down' is your obligation," said Spacey.
"That's why I've set up The Kevin Spacey Foundation and I am thrilled to be able to be developing this Academy for the Middle East region for this purpose."
