Dubai has been named the Middle East’s ‘2011 World Festival and Event City’ in recognition of its work in organising and hosting international events. The title was handed over by global body, the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) and local association, Dubai Events and Promotions (DEPE).
The prestigious announcement was made in Fort Worth, Texas during the IEFA Convention and Expo. On hand to pick up the accolade was Laila Suhail, CEO of the Department of Economic Development and organizer of the hugely popular Dubai Shopping Festival and Dubai Summer Surprises. "For more than a decade and a half now, since the launch of the first edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival in 1996, Dubai has been raising the bar of excellence in organising and hosting world class events and festivals," Suhail told Dubai’s Gulf News.
Dubai has become a thriving hub for international events and conferences; from world travel, trade and technology expos, to global sporting events such as the golf’s Dubai World Championship and Desert Classic. One sector benefitting greatly from this is Dubai’s hotel industry, which continues to post highly positive results. During major events such as the Dubai Shopping Festival, many of the city’s hotels operate at or close to maximum capacity, good news for investors in the emirate’s hotel market.
