The Dubai municipality has launched a new laboratory for testing green building methods and materials, it has been announced.

Hawa Abdullah Bastaki, director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department, said that the move was aimed at reducing energy consumption in compliance with official specifications for green buildings, Gulf News reported.

"A guide has been prepared, which includes an inventory of all green building materials and products. It includes the names and addresses of suppliers and manufacturers of these materials, in addition to another detailed guide that includes the names of laboratories that can test these materials," said the director.

She added that the laboratory has already been conducting physical and mechanical tests on a range of building materials including concrete, steel, tiles, cement, mortar products, and humidity insulation products.

Meanwhile, it was reported recently that Dubai witnessed a 15 per cent rise in hotel occupancy rates during its recent Summer Surprises shopping and tourism festival.
