Ras Al Khaimah targets sustainable building

Ras Al Khaimah's crown prince and deputy ruler has emphasised the importance of utilising technology wherever possible to create sustainable buildings and developments in the emirate.

Responding to a question by Construction Week, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi said that environmentally-friendly solutions are an important priority for Ras Al Khaimah as its economy grows.

"It's something that's part of the whole country," he said. "God has blessed us with the sun and technology has seen dramatic improvement - and in Ras Al Khaimah we have sponsored a solar island project."

The solar project in question is an artificial island off the coast of the emirate that was launched in 2007 as a joint venture between the government and Neuchatel's Swiss Centerre for Electronics and Microtechnology.

Construction Week observed that as a floating structure, the project could be easily turned to always face the sun, generating maximum power.

The news comes after the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority this week predicted that the emirate's gross domestic product will grow by 12 per cent this year.ADNFCR-2019-ID-19904636-ADNFCR
