The UAE's six airports will together handle 41.7 million passengers by 2020 - a significant increase on the current level of about 26 million passengers, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has said.
Laila Ali Bin Harib Al Muhairi , director of strategic planning and corporate excellence at the GCAA, told the Khaleej Times the figure was based on projections of six per cent annual growth.
"The actual growth could be much higher than our projections, and that has been our experience in the UAE in various sectors including in aviation industry," she added.
Meanwhile, the official noted that flight movements in the UAE are also expected to grow at about six per cent annually to reach 997,000 by 2020. She said that such predictions indicate that the UAE could have nine airports by 2020.
The news comes after flydubai, Dubai's first low cost airline, received its ninth Boeing 737-800NG this week, marking its latest on-time aircraft delivery in less than 13 months of operation.
