Dubai International Airport recorded a 13.9 per cent increase in passenger numbers during April compared to the same month last year.
Officials at Dubai Airports hailed the achievement as particularly impressive given the widespread disruption caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
The airport saw passenger traffic grow to 3,289,037 from 3,745,016 in April 2009, which amounts to a year-to-date passenger traffic increase of 18.7 per cent, up to 15,215,536.
In addition, it was revealed that cargo volumes increased 19.6 per cent compared to the same month last year, from 149,169 tonnes to 178,357 tonnes.
"To record double-digit growth during a month where over 500 flights were cancelled is impressive," said Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports.
"It's a clear indication that our confidence in the continued growth at Dubai International is well placed," he added.
Linda Mahoney, founder and chief executive officer of Better Homes, observed during a recent lecture at Capital Club Dubai that the emirate is continuing to add around 10,000 residents per month, with the population passing 1.8 million in the first quarter of 2010 according to the Dubai Statistics Centre.
