Dubai International Airport (DIA) welcomed 22.6 per cent more passengers in February compared to the same month last year.

The airport handled 3,640,323 passengers during the month compared to 2,969,569 passengers in February 2009, Gulf News reported.

Strong growth during February follows record passenger traffic of over 3.8 million in January. This was a 17 per cent increase on January 2009 figures.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports, said DIA was the fastest growing major international airport in 2009 and that this year's figures reflected continued, strong growth.

In addition to growing passenger numbers, Dubai Airports Cargo and Logistics handled a total of 171,707 tonnes of freight last month – a rise of 26.7 per cent on February 2009.

The body said rising confidence among shippers and the re-stocking of inventories worldwide were positive factors affecting freight volumes.

This week, it was also reported that passenger traffic increased by 17.2 per cent at Abu Dhabi International Airport during February 2010 compared with the same month last year.
