Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates airline, has agreed a partnership with DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight forwarder of Deutsche Post DHL, which aims to drive "the e-freight agenda" across their networks.
In a statement, both companies pointed to the strategic value of e-freight and stated their intention to become the industry leaders in implementing it.
E-freight is an industry-led project involving carriers, freight forwarders, ground handlers, shippers and customs authorities which aims to take the paperwork out of the air cargo supply chain, streamline processes, improve speed and reduce costs.
Both Emirates and DHL pointed to International Air Transport Association research which found that up to $4.9 billion of annual industry savings could be generated by e-freight processes.
Ram Menen, Emirates divisional senior vice-president for cargo, said: "Emirates is a huge advocate of e-freight and is already one of the leaders in the industry in actual numbers of shipment carried on the e-freight lanes.
"The benefits it has brought our business are enormous, which is why we are encouraging others to embrace it."
DHL is a global market leader in the logistics industry, boasting a network of more than 220 countries and territories and about 300,000 employees worldwide.
