The Dubai government has said that it is "fully prepared" to host the United Nations (UN) headquarters, an idea suggested by the US business magazine Forbes.
In a statement the emirate announced: "Dubai is fully prepared to host the UN's headquarters on its soil if UN officials decide to move the headquarters from New York," the Associated French Press reports.
The government confirmed that it is ready to discuss the benefits of such a move with UN officials. These would include those relating to Dubai's geographic location, communications and infrastructure.
Dubai has invested heavily in infrastructure, including a metro and several highways. This week it was also revealed that Dubai International Airport experienced year-on-year growth of 9.2 per cent in passenger numbers in 2009, making it one of the busiest airports in the world.
Forbes had suggested that Dubai now resembles a 21st century world capital, adding that moving the UN to Dubai "could signal a potential opportunity to the global community".
