Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has unveiled Dubai 2020, a new initiative that aspires to bring the World Expo and the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the emirate.
The sheikh has announced that a working group will be established to develop a strategy to secure the global events with a focus on key sectors in Dubai and the wider emirates.
Clinching both events in the same year will be a particularly unique achievement as the Olympics and the World Expo only coincide once every two decades.
"These two global events ... give us a sense of common purpose and play to our strengths," said Sheikh Mohammed.
Under a decree issued by the sheikh, the new working group will be headed up by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, crown prince of Dubai.
The next World Expo will be held in Shanghai in 2010, while London will play host to the Olympics in 2012.
