Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with two other transport bodies with the aim off developing a mass transit culture in the emirate.
The memorandum of understanding was signed with School Transport Services and Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai for a period of three years. Its objectives include broadening the mobility options offered to public and private sector employees in a bid to minimise the number of trips to and from places of work.
Ultimately, the RTA hopes people will be encouraged to relinquish single-car occupancy and utilise mass transit systems.
Yousef Abdullah Al Madani, the RTA's director of transportation systems, said the agreement was concerned with "furthering employee awareness of the importance of mobility management programs, fostering the culture of sustained transport in Dubai".
The agreement will help to reduce congestion in Dubai city centre during peak travelling times, Mr Al Madani added.
An improving mass transit system has served to encourage investment in Dubai. Last week it was announced that since the start of the Dubai Metro operation in September, about six million passengers have used its Red Line service.
