Speaking to Emirates Business, the director-general of Dubai Department of Economic Development Sami Dhaen Al Qamzi said that early indications show that the gross domestic production of the emirates grew between 13 and 16 per cent in 2008.
And with 37 per cent of total output, wholesale and retail sectors were the biggest contributors to the good health of the economy, outweighing even the UAE property market.
Mr Al Qamzi announced a partnership with the Dubai Statistics Centre to produce official figures for various sectors, with results expected to see publication in the first quarter of 2009.
And while retail and UAE property performed strongly, he added that the department would look to expand in other sectors.
"We are trying to develop sectors such as logistics and finance and they have high potential. Our role in this is to study these sectors and look at the regulations," he said.
Mr Al Qamzi was appointed to his position by Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in October 2008.
