Umm Al Quwain
Umm Al Quwain, is one of the 7 members of the United Arab Emirates, covering an area of over 750 square kilometres, equivalent to one per cent of the country's total area. It is ruled by His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mu'alla, who came to power in 1981.
The name Umm Al Quwain literally means "Mother of two powers", a reference to the Emirates' strong seafaring heritage. Recent history of Umm Al Quwain dates back two centuries to the mid 1700's when the 'Al Ali' tribe moved from Al Sinniyah Island due to the drinking water supply drying up.
Offering a mix of cultures from the traditional Bedouin culture to an ultra modern city, Umm Al Quwain, like all of the UAE has a long and proud history and examples of this history and ancient architecture are still in existence today.
From the lush green mangroves lining the shores of the Arabian Gulf, Umm Al Quwain stretches across the rolling arid sand dunes to the rich oasis surrounding Falaj Al Moalla 50 kilometres away.
From November to March, temperatures are idyllic and average the mid 20's in daytime and 15C at night (79F to 59F). Temperatures can rise over 40C (104F) in the summer. With minimal rainfall year round, this secluded coastline of the UAE is blessed with cooling sea breezes and unspoilt beaches.
