Important Dubai mapping project complete

Dubai has entered the digital age after the Dubai Municipality's Geographic Information Systems Department completed the high-quality aerial mapping of the city.As well as a digital, highly-detailed map of the emirate, the project incorporated a number of 360-degree panoramas of famous parks, tourism hotspots and historic sites and temples. While the mapping system is designed to help planning and site inspectors, it will also be an invaluable tool for property investors and tourists.Abdul Hakim Malik, director of the department charged with mapping the city, said the integrated geographic information will benefit people in various fields and noted that the digital imagery is accurate to 15cm thanks to the UltraCam cameras and Vexcel Imaging technology used.Speaking to the Khaleej Times, Mr Malik said: "Once stitched, the resulting geo-referenced images give the possibility to visit different locations virtually without the need for videotaping or site visiting."The entire digital map project will be published on the Dubai Municipality website. It is the first map of its kind to be created in the emirate and covers a total area of 5,189 sq km.It will make navigation of the emirate much easier and help to showcase astonishing landmarks that will in turn help drive tourism numbers - which incidentally reached a record high in the first half of 2012, climbing by 13.7 per cent year-on-year by July.Dubai International Airport handled a total of 27.9 million passengers in the first six months of the year - welcoming some four million travellers in June alone.Part of the reason for the huge growth in traveller numbers was the introduction of 12 new routes to and from the emirate, which has made it much more accessible.Property investors with holiday lets have benefitted in particular from a surge of passengers coming from Saudi Arabia, the USA, Qatar and Australia. Interestingly new initiatives to make life easier for travellers - including Information Zones at the airport - have recently been undertaken.
