Work on Dubai tram network picks up pace

Construction on the Al Sufouh tramline has picked up a pace, with a viaduct now carved out and clearly visible between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Marina. Developers say the $1.08 billion light rail system is well on course for a November 2014 finish. The 14km network will weave its way through 19 stations, from Mall of the Emirates, past Media City and Knowledge Village, along to Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Walk, making travel in and around the ‘New Dubai’ area even easier.

In February this year the Dubai government secured a $675 million deal to guarantee the completion of phase one of the project. Up to 12 of the 19 stations will be in operation under this phase, serviced by a total of 8 trains, each carrying up to 400 passengers. The tramline will greatly add to the ease of commuting, making hotspots like the beachfront’s ‘The Walk’ and the highly popular Dubai Marina area very easy to access. The latter is home to The First Group’s prestigious hotel apartment project, TFG Dubai Marina Hotel. Not only will residents of the four star hotel be able to hop on the tram, they are also just minutes away from the Dubai Metro network, Dubai Water Taxi stops and the Sheikh Zayed Road.
