'Knowing the local language' could help those moving to Dubai

Moving to a new country is a stressful process, but for those buying in Dubai in order to set up home in the emirate, these anxieties could be alleviated if they take the time to learn some basic Arabic.Marketing manager at Expat Focus Lindsay de Feliz believes having at least some knowledge of the native tongue of the destination a person is moving to can be an enormous help. She explained that by understanding a greeting and pleasantry in the language of their new home, people will find it is easier to settle in and make friends.People who can speak a little Arabic to their neighbours and colleagues in Dubai may find they are received warmly, as it can be a pleasant surprise to people and proves expats are interested in immersing themselves in the culture of their new home."Not only will your experience of the country be richer, you will make friends more quickly and enjoy being part of a new culture," Ms de Feliz stated. The expert noted that getting to grips with a language comes more naturally to some than others and so it is important that when somebody embarks on a learning project such as this they need to find out what kind of teaching method works for them, which could be audio tapes, DVDs, evening classes or a private tutor."Choose the one that suits your way of learning best and your lifestyle and try and learn some of the language before moving," Ms de Feliz suggested. She said the most important thing to commit to memory are "I am sorry, I do not understand", "where is" and "how do I".Furthermore, basic verbs such as to have, to go and to want and pleasantries like please, thank you, hello and goodbye will be useful too."Wherever you are in the world, the local people will always appreciate someone who is making the effort to speak in their language," the expert concluded.
