Dubai International Film Festival gets ready for launch
The ninth edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) gets underway this weekend, with more than 150 movies due to be screened at the event.Running from Sunday December 9th to Sunday December 16th, the festival will attract filmmakers, industry professionals and cinema-goers from around the world.A gala screening of Life of Pi, the new 3D adaptation of Yann Martel's Booker prize-winning novel by acclaimed director Ang Lee, is set to officially open the DIFF.Chairman of the festival Abdulhamid Juma said there is "something for everyone" in this year's programme, which contains films from 61 countries in 43 different languages."Year after year, the festival attracts such a high level of films and filmmakers and I'm delighted to say that the ninth year is no different," he added.Mr Juma described Life of Pi as a film that "truly epitomises the ethos of DIFF's 'Bridging Cultures' mandate", as the fantasy adventure was shot in India, Canada and Taiwan.Celebrities expected to appear on the red carpet during the festival's opening night include Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto, award-winning actress Cate Blanchett and tennis player Ana Ivanovic.There will also be appearances from Life of Pi cast members Suraj Sharma, Adil Hussain and Shravanthi Sainath, as well as local stars such as Reem Erahma, Jaber Naghmoush and Habib Gholoum.Veteran Egyptian actor Mahmoud Abdul Aziz and prolific British filmmaker Michael Apted, the director of Gorillas in the Mist and The World Is Not Enough, are due to receive lifetime achievement awards at the festival.The DIFF has grown into the leading film festival in the Middle East, Asia and Africa since its inaugural event in 2004. It aims to provide a platform for Arab filmmakers and spearhead the growth of the region's movie industry, while also welcoming international visitors.
