International tennis body to hold AGM in Dubai

Leaders at Tennis Emirates have spoken of their delight after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced it would stage its all-important 2014 annual general meeting (AGM) in Dubai.A vote was held by members of the ITF board in Prague following the completion of the recent Davis Cup match between Czech Republic and Spain to see where the gathering will take place. The ITF AGM is a huge event in the tennis calendar and representatives from more than 220 countries around the world will descend on the UAE for the meeting. It is essentially a forum for the sport's leading lights to discuss all matters that affect the game, ranging from potential rule changes to anti-doping measures. The UAE was up against Egypt and Serbia - the home country of tennis sensation Novak Djokovic - in the vote and this will be the first time the AGM is held in the Middle East.President of Tennis Emirates Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum said it is a proud moment for the country."We in Tennis Emirates are looking forward to welcome the tennis family to Dubai. We will make sure that the meeting in Dubai will be an outstanding event and a memorable one for many years to come," he remarked.ITF president Francesco Ricci-Bitti was also happy with the final outcome, insisting the UAE has "unmatched infrastructure and facilities".Dubai is certainly well accustomed to staging events of this magnitude. It is renowned for hosting huge international exhibitions and conferences, mainly at the Dubai World Trade Centre and this would not have escaped the ITF board members' attention. The UAE is also quickly becoming a hub for major sporting events, a point that is being emphasised at this very moment.Yesterday (November 22nd), the highly anticipated finale of golf's European Tour season got underway at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. The sport's creme de la creme have descended on the emirate for the DP World Tour Championship, including European number one Rory McIlroy.
