Dubai airport sets new passenger record

Property investors in the Middle East could be among those encouraged by the number of people flying into Dubai.Demand for short-term stays may have increased in recent months after Dubai International Airport welcomed a record number of passengers through its terminals in 2011.According to the flight hubs' latest figures, more than 51 million passengers passed through last year, an eight per cent increase on 2010.Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports, explained that the addition of new routes helped the airport overcome a number of obstacles over the last 12 months."In a year that was characterised by economic uncertainty, political instability and high oil prices passenger growth continued unabated driven by new routes and additional frequencies as airlines capitalised on Dubai's attractiveness as a business and tourism destination and efficiency as a transfer hub," he commented. The expert also claimed that the trend is set to continue in 2012 with Emirates and flydubai - the region's largest carriers - set to receive additional aircraft throughout the year.
