Rio Ferdinand spends some time in Dubai

Rio Ferdinand is the latest high-profile sports star to spend some time in Dubai. The Manchester United and England defender arrived in the city over the weekend (October 13th - 14th), as he made the most of a gap in the Premier League fixture schedule.Representatives of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing were there to meet the former West Ham and Leeds man and they were delighted to welcome such an established footballer.Executive director of business tourism Hamad M Bin Mejren said: "Hosting such an outstanding player by the department shows the attention paid to the promotion of the emirate of Dubai as a global sporting destination."The emirate hosts outstanding and famous players and clubs from all over the world, and sports tourism plays an important role in attracting tourists to the country."With so many luxury five-star hotels, designer boutiques and gorgeous beaches, Dubai has fast become a playground for the rich and famous.Ferdinand - who will be hoping to line up for his team against Stoke City at Old Trafford next weekend - is one of many Premier League players to take a break in the emirate this year.Speaking to the Daily Mail last week, Liverpool and England midfielder Jordan Henderson said that Dubai was his favourite holiday destination."I love to get to Dubai, it's an impressive place and you can do lots of different things there," the former Sunderland player was quoted as saying. Not only is Dubai a good place for footballers to unwind, but it is steadily emerging as a decent place to play too. There is obviously a long way to go before the local league is anywhere near strong enough to compete with the immensely popular English Premier League, but the emirate hasn't done badly in attracting some star names.Until recently, Argentina legend Diego Maradona was in charge of Dubai club Al Wasl and the diminutive former player - widely regarded as one of the best the world has ever seen - seemed to really enjoy his stint in the UAE.
