The UAE has a knack for attracting some of the biggest and most important events in the world.International conferences and exhibitions are regularly held at the Dubai World Trade Centre and some of the most influential people from a variety of sectors - ranging from the building trade to the technology industry - descend on the emirate all year round.Reports are circulating that the UAE could be in line to host the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom World event again in 2014 and 2016.This is the leading international gathering for the information and communications technology (ICT) sector and would bring some extremely powerful companies to the Gulf.Nothing has been confirmed just yet, but the event was staged in Dubai this year - the first time it has ever been held outside the United Nations. It was a great success and the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) is hoping to secure the next two events."The UAE has shown interest to host the premier event for ICT industry in 2014 and 2016, however the ITU Telecom Board will announce the final decision in due course of time," Tariq Al Awadhi, executive director of spectrum and international affairs at the TRA, told the Khaleej Times.Meanwhile, secretary-general of the ITU Dr Hamadoun Toure was quoted by the news provider as saying the UAE is the "perfect place" for ICT because of the widespread services and applications that are on offer. The UAE has staged a number of technology-based events other than 2012 ITU Telecom World this year.Just this week, Dubai has welcomed thousands of industry specialists to Gitex Technology Week 2012.A total of 3,500 suppliers from 144 countries showcased their latest innovative gadgets during the five-day exhibition.Attendees were also give a sneak preview of the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system, which reiterates the point that the UAE is becoming renowned as a global hub for state-of-the-art technology.Landing the next two ITU Telecom World events will only serve to boost the country's reputation even further.
