Dubai to launch new Windows 8 operating system

Dubai's status as a technological hub has been enhanced yet again, as Microsoft chose the emirate to launch its Windows 8 operating system.It was selected as one of the six global destinations to first release the upgraded platform.According to Gulf News, Paris, New Delhi, Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York were also chosen by the computer giant.The global rollout will go ahead on October 26th and it will undoubtedly bring even more prestige to the UAE.Samer Abu Ltaif, regional general manager of Microsoft Gulf, told the news provider that the updated operating system will enable users to have the same features on their desktop, laptop, Xbox, smartphone and media tablet."This is an exciting year for us and all the retailers have geared up to launch their products," he was quoted as saying.Microsoft will also demonstrate a number of applications for Sharaf DG, Shop and Ship, Jumeirah Restaurants, Dubai International Airport Aramex, Gulf News, Dewa, Time Out Dubai and Dubai Cinemas, which will be available from the Windows Store."We are targeting to have 80 corporate applications from the region for the launch," Mr Ltaif continued.The launch is another indication of how Dubai has become a major player when it comes to cutting-edge electronics."We are committed to continually bringing to the UAE and Gulf the latest technology innovation that will improve people's lives and empower businesses," Mr Ltaif added.Dubai is currently staging the all-important Gitex Technology Week 2012, which has attracted many of the world's leading technology experts and manufacturers to the Middle East.Attendees have already had the chance to run the rule over the Windows 8 App before it is launched later in the month, WAM reports.The company has been giving people a sneak preview of the application and also demonstrated how it works.Director of Gitex Technology Week Yvonne Zeljkovic told the news provider that organisers of the event have identified the hottest global IT trends and then incorporated them into the exhibition.
