New convention centres in Kenya get go-ahead

Plans for two new convention centres in Kenya - a 5,000 capacity convention centre in Mombasa and a similar project in Kisumu - have been announced by the government.According to figures, the meetings market accounts for around 14 per cent of the yearly overall tourism to Kenya.Indeed, the government said that it is an area for significant growth opportunities.Beatrice Makawiti, Kenyatta International Convention Centre managing director, commented: "Our country's ranking in the industry has been rising exponentially (in the International Congress and Convention Association, ICCA, rankings), and now the country stands at number three in Africa, closing in on South Africa and Egypt."Najib Balala, the tourism minister, has advised the Kenya Tourism Development Corporation to proceed to the design stage for the convention centres, with both projects set for completion by the end of 2012.Meanwhile, a senior finance ministry official claimed earlier this week that Kenya's shilling is expected to strengthen as the government improves communication with financial markets.
