RAK gears up for Awafi with world record attempt
Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) could expect to see a surge in tourism numbers next year when a Guinness World Record attempt is made at the popular Awafi Festival. The event will see the largest gathering of four-wheel drive vehicles, beating the current record of 226.Faisal Abdul Aziz Al Mattar, general co-ordinator of annual festival and head of administrative services at the Economic Development Department, told Gulf News that the record-breaking attempt should not be difficult as the annual festival sees increased visitor numbers year-on-year.Now in its ninth year, the three-week festival celebrates the Emirati culture and heritage, putting on theatre performances and outdoor sports. One of the highlights is the four-wheel vehicle and quad biking that takes place amongst the red sand dunes of Awafi.Mr Mattar told the news provider: "Awafi tourism area attracts lots of nature loving families and youth from inside and outside the country."They come specifically to enjoy the sand dunes and the activities that take place as part of this festival."
