More Dubai commuters take public transport

There has been an increase in the number of people in Dubai choosing public transport, figures from the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) show.In the first half of 2011, 54 million people took public bus transport and 29 million used the Dubai Metro. It comes as the RTA aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles by expanding the emirate's public transport network under the Dubai Infrastructure Strategic Plan. Indeed, it plans to increase the use of mass transit from six per cent in 2009 to 30 per cent in 2020.Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the RTA, told Emirates 24/7 that in the first half of the year, public transport was used by 11 per cent of Dubai residents."The huge investments injected by the Dubai government in upgrading the transport system infrastructure proved both successful and effective," he said. "The rising number of mass transport commuters illustrates the evolution in the culture of using mass transit means by the public representing various spectrums of the community particularly with the availability of the metro service."
