Kenya to open up to GM crops

Kenya has become the fourth African country to open up to genetically modified (GM) crops, Reuters has reported. This comes new laws were approved to allow their production and importation.Despite this, East Africa's leading economy still faces growing resistance from lobbyists against the decision.Hellen Sambili, acting higher education, science and technology minister, confirmed the laws would come into effect on July 1st. As a result, restrictions on GM maize and other various products in the country will be ended."In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 1 of the Biosafety Act, 2009, the Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology appoints the first (of) July, 2011, as the date on which the act shall come into operation," read the Legal Notice seen by Reuters.Last week, Kenya's National Safety Authority confirmed its intention to create a legal framework to approve importation of GM maize in order to mitigate a impending shortage.
