Kenya set to improve access to free information

Kenya has launched a web portal allowing free information access, the first of its kind in sub-Sahara Africa. As a result, information such as population figures and government expenditure will be available in a digital format. This type of information is already available in various government ministries, but it has proved difficult to access."Today marks an important step in our aspirations to open up the government and make it more responsive, efficient and accountable," president Mwai Kibaki said at the launch of the Open Government Data Portal.Last year, Kenya adopted a new constitution which gives the right to information. It is, however, yet to enact the freedom of information law which regulates access to government figures."We will enact necessary legislation ... to ensure continued public access to government data and information," added Kibaki. He also expressed regret that the slow Internet speeds in the country would hinder data retrieval.
