Kenya seeks to resume direct flights to US

Negotiations have resumed to ensure that there are direct flights between Kenya and the US, Business Daily Africa has reported. This follows security concerns which led to the cancellation of Delta Airlines' inaugural Atlanta-Nairobi flight two years ago.It is hoped that this will lead to a 50 per cent increase in the number of tourists entering Kenya from the US. Furthermore, it is expected that the move will see a rise in organic food and flower exports."We have agreed that the US embassy becomes a central player as Kenya and US governments start discussing this issue," Najib Balala, the country's tourism minister, explained.Balala was speaking on the same day he hosted US ambassador Jonathan Scott Gration at his Nairobi office. At present, Kenya receives 100,000 tourists per year from the US, though there is the potential for this figure to increase markedly. To this end, the Kenyan Tourism Ministry allocated Sh88 million to marketing Kenya in the US, double the amount of 2010.
