Duty free spending on the rise

Duty free shopping in the Middle East is in rude health, according to a new report.Figures recently published by Dubai Duty Free (DDF) have shown that half year sales rose 16.6 per cent to $698 million.Perfumes and gold continue to dominate sales, increasing by 20 per cent and 24 per cent respectively.Electronic goods also enjoyed a healthy sales increase, with purchases rising by 22 per cent to $54 million in the first six months of 2011.Colm McLoughlin, managing director of DDF, said: "We are extremely pleased that 2011 has shaped up to be such a positive year for the operation. We have seen consumer spending increase across most categories with significant spikes in luxury sector products."We are obviously delighted to retain the number one spot for the third consecutive year. In acknowledging this achievement I would like to thank the firm's chairman and president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, for his ongoing support."
