CMA calls for investments in SMEs

Stella Kilonzo, Capital Markets Authority (CMA) chief executive officer, has encouraged development partners to invest in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), kbc.co.ke has reported.SMEs are an important sector of the economy contributing over 60 per cent, according to Ms Kilonzo, who said that they are providing employment to many people."The micro-finance enterprises in Kenya are ready to give returns if only they get impact investors to finance them. When giving such contracts to investors, caution should be taken to ensure mutual benefit for both the SMEs and the investors," she commented.For Kenya to be a middle level income as outlined in Vision 2030, Ms Kilonzo said that financial partnerships are important.She insisted the government should create an enabling environment.Kenya should consider the East African Community standpoint, she added, urging investors ensure that their projects have impact in the society.Ms Kilonzo was speaking during a seminar on ‘Impacting Investment in Kenya' at a Nairobi hotel.
