RTA: Dubai Metro will absorb 17% journeys

The Dubai Metro will serve 17 per cent of daily journeys in the emirate, or around 230,000 passengers. This is according to Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), who said that the new 23km-long Green Line will take the extra capacity using 25 trains. Before the line opens, the RTA is running tests without passengers to check that brakes, speed, communication systems and load capacity are in order, Al Khaleej reported.Servicing 16 stations throughout Dubai including Dubai International Airport, the Green Line will open this September, running alongside the Red Line, which has 44 trains. Both lines will intersect at Union station, the largest underground metro station in the world – comprising 25,000 square meters. It also has the capacity for 22,000 passengers an hour.It is hoped that the new transport network will provide a major boost to Dubai's economy, particularly to areas serviced by the metro stations, increasing land value and nearby real estate.
