Public schools in Dubai see marked improvement

Dubai's public schools have seen their ratings improved following a review by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).Six out of 79 public schools were rated as Outstanding by KHDA, while just one was rated Unsatisfactory.Almost half of the public schools are, therefore, now in the Good or Outstanding categories, up ten per cent since the first round of inspections in 2008-09.Added to this, 33 schools were rated as Good and 39 as Acceptable.Abdullah Al Karam, chairman and director-general of KHDA, commented: "During the last three years, we have been able to create and sustain interest among school leaders and parents."In the first year of school inspections, we set a baseline for the schools to understand and follow. Last year, we measured their improvement and now we can see the emerging trends."Jameela Al Muhairi, chief of the Dubai School Inspection Bureau, noted that public schools are improving their quality to compete with private schools "as they also learn from the best practices of schools which perform well".
