Emirates named largest carrier of global traffic

Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, has retained its status as the world's largest carrier by international traffic, emirates247.com has reported. For the second consecutive year, the airline has finished top of the International Air Transport Association's (Iata) rankings. This comes shortly after Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Emirates Group chairman, claimed that the carrier is the world's largest airline by scheduled international passenger kilometres flown.Elsewhere, Lufthansa maintained its second rank in terms of international traffic, while Delta Air Lines jumped from ninth position in 2009 to third last year.Emirates, on the other hand, saw its rank jumping from seventh in 2009 to fourth a year later.Iata explained that a passenger kilometre is a unit used to measure traffic by multiplying the number of passengers by the number of kilometres each passenger has flown.Emirates announced recently that its profits climbed 52 per cent to $1.5 billion (Dh5.5bn) in the 12 months to March 31st.
