Dubai builds new port

The Dubai Municipality has announced it is to build a new port at Deira Creek. It will be dedicated to the use for merchant ships departing the emirate, with the hope that it will take pressure off the traffic at Bur Dubai Creek.Eng Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, said: "Dubai Creek has currently a single port for the clearance of arriving and departing ships. The number of these ships exceeds 22,000 merchant ships annually."It leads to rush and delay of procedures for the workers entry and exit and inspections of ships, especially as the creek is a main port for traditional ships coming to the emirate."Once complete, Dubai Creek will be used for arriving ships only, which will also increase efficiency, Mr Lootah said. The project will cost Dh15.8 million and will include a marine terminal, accommodating space for four large merchant ships, as well as government buildings on land.It has a scheduled completion date of August and construction includes digging at the bottom of the creek to allow large ships laden with goods to dock.
