UAE tourism market 'unaffected' by unrest

In spite of the recent turmoil and unrest in the Middle East, the UAE's tourism market has remained unaffected, new figures have revealed.Citi Investment Research and Analysis has found that Dubai was the only traditional tourism destination in the region which saw an increase in revenues per available room (RevPAR).RevPAR in the emirate was up 7.9 per cent over the period, while a 4.4 per cent increase in room rates as well a 2.8 per cent increase in occupancy was also seen."We believe Dubai and Abu Dhabi will continue to lead the growth in the tourism sector, aided by possible ongoing political uncertainty elsewhere in the region," the report stated.Furthermore, the report added that while the GCC countries that were unaffected by the turmoil showed some measure of growth in tourism, both Dubai and Abu Dhabi were by far the "best performers".Lawrence Franklin, strategy and policy director at the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority recently claimed that the emirate's hotel industry has maintained "upward momentum" during the first quarter of the year.
