The UAE's minister of economy Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori hopes to get every person living in the UAE using the internet by 2012.This will make it the first country in the world to achieve 100 per cent broadband penetration and will follow on from its success to achieve 200 per cent penetration of the mobile market.Already, the UAE is in the top ten for the quality of its broadband service in the world. Currently the nation has 40 per cent broadband penetration.Speaking at the Mecom CEO Summit in Abu Dhabi, Mr Al Mansoori said that spending on telecommunications in 2011 could be the biggest it has ever spent.Nasser bin Obood, chief executive of Etisalat, commented: "UAE's average internet connection speed has seen a dramatically impressive 68 per cent increase in quarter-on-quarter and 309 per cent increase in year-on-year."The internet and telecommunications sector is one of the fastest growing and technologically innovative sectors. We are committed to constantly working hard to ensure that we remain one of the most connected nations in the world."
