RAK to focus on South Asian expat tourism

Ras Al Khaimah will focus on tourism from the South Asian expatriate workforce with the relaunch of RAK Airways, it has been reported.Global Arab Network stated that the emirate is looking to boost its tourism sector and will use the airline to "occupy a niche segment between the full-service carriers and the low-cost carriers", RAK Airways chief executive, Omar Jahameh, said. The airline has expanded its flights to Calicut in Kerala and Cairo and could even increase its services to Jeddah. The emirate has also established a new Tourism Development Authority, which will oversee the planning, development and regulation of RAK's tourism industry.According to the news provider, RAK's tourism agenda could help it reach its target to increase annual hotel visitors to 2.5 million by 2012.In 2009, the total number of visitors to RAK was just 542,000, although figures had risen 132 per cent to this number in just one year, suggesting that it could rise exponentially over the next 12 months.
