New Kenya airport terminal set for 2012 completion

Kenya's new airport terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is set to be completed by 2012.Ministers revealed that the expansion will allow the airport to handle around nine million passengers a year. This is a significant increase from its current capacity of six million, Bloomberg reported.A loan of $186 million has been acquired to finance the project, including $6 million worth of funding from the Luxembourg-based European Investment Bank.Amos Kimunya, transport minister for Kenya, told the news agency that the building of this latest terminal represents the second stage of expansion, following a $40 million expansion in 2006."We also have plans to construct a second runway to handle the ever-increasing traffic," Mr Kimunya added. In addition to this, one of the existing terminals will be expanded and a new baggage-handling system will be installed to handle the increase in passengers. The airport serves as an important travel hub for East Africa.
