Middle East's biggest power and water plant opens
The biggest power and water desalination plant in the Middle East has opened in Fujairah. It will supply much of the power and water supply needed for the UAE, producing 2,000 megawatts of electricity and 130 million gallons of water every day.Speaking at the inauguration event, deputy prime minister Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said that the site in Qidfa – which cost $2.8 billion - will lead to new economic and investment projects, including new construction starts. This could then lead to the creation of new urban centres in the emirate.Sheikh Mansour remarked: "The plant is a model for the economic partnership success set up by the UAE with the specialised international corporations to woo the foreign investments and advanced technology to help the country develop local cadres."It is also hoped that the site will become a major component to the power network among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.Earlier this week, ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum led a delegation to a major GCC summit.
