July start for second phase of Dubai World Central

The second building phase of Dubai World Central will begin in July 2012, the chief operating officer of the project, Rashid Bu Quraaha has said.Design work is currently underway on the site, which has a scheduled completion date of 2020.Once complete, the Dubai World Central will become one of the leading trade centres in the world and will include the Al Maktoum International airport, set to be the world's largest terminal.Situated in Jebel Ali, the 140 square kilometre site will also have specialised free zones focused on logistics and aviation industries, connected to Jebel Ali Sea Port.Speaking at a conference organised by the Dubai International Financial Centre, Mr Bu Quraaha said the terminal will have the capacity for 80 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo each year, Al Bayan reported.The first phase of the project cost AED 14 billion, he said, and currently has a capacity of five million passengers and manages more than 100 airlines and logistics firms that come in and out of the site.
