UAE calls for greater investment in public transport

Transport officials in the UAE have called for greater investment to be made to public transport systems, not just within the UAE but worldwide.Marking the end of a successful UITP Congress in Dubai, which attracted over 2,000 delegates from transport professions in 85 countries and 9,700 visitors, it was announced that $40 billion would be invested in UEA public transport by 2025.According to the Khaleej Times, a total of $80 billion will eventually be needed to develop a world class public transport system throughout the nation.Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla, member of the Roads Transport Authority board told the news provider that the first stage of this would likely be ways to tackle congestion in Dubai and promote the use of public transport in the emirate.Indeed, officials at the final day of the UITP suggested that congestion charges should be imposed, as well as a restriction on the use of private cars.
