Three contracts out for Etihad Rail's first phase

The first three contracts have been put out in the market for bidding for the first phase of Etihad Rail's new national rail network.Chief executive Richard Bowker told Reuters that the first of these would be announced in the next three to four months, while the expected completion date would be seven to eight years away.He explained that the first phase is for 264km of track from Shah to Ruwais and the contract will be for infrastructure including tracks, communication systems and signals.Meanwhile, the other two contracts will be for locomotives and wagons carrying sulphur.Once complete, the Dh40 billion project will span up to 1,200km, linking major cities in the UAE and to Saudi Arabia and Oman.Mr Bowker told the agency: "We will have the first railway in operation 2013, beginning 2014, and from that point onwards the network will then expand. Anytime thereafter we could start put passenger services on. But priority at the moment is freight."
