Dubai paving the way in public transport investment

Dubai has been boosted recently by major investment in public transport systems, paving the way for other large cities in reducing car use.As the emirate hosts the congress of UITP, the international public transport association, delegates were able to examine the increase in buses in Dubai and the new metro.Just 18 months ago, people had to commute by taxi or car, the Financial Times (FT) noted.Mohamed Mezghani, head of UITP's Middle East office, told the news provider: "Dubai took less than four years to build its first metro line. Building 50km in less than four years – it's a very big achievement."However, he added that developers must "offer services that are competitive with the comfort they have in their cars, with the travel times they can have with their cars".The FT reported that the Dubai metro has outperformed its pre-opening traffic forecasts, supporting the city's public transport system and other areas including Abu Dhabi are now considering major investment in public transport.
